Installing the SecureDoc Client on Mac OS X

Note: Boot Camp configured Macs are not compatible with SecureDoc unless equipped with a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED). Use of alternate encryption methods will be required for non-SED configured Macs with Bootcamp.

  • SecureDoc Version: 5.3 SR2

  • Operating System: Mac OS X up to 10.7.4

Before SecureDoc installation, make sure you are aware of the following:

  • Any existing data encryption, including FileVault encryption on home directories, must be removed.

  • Performing a full data backup prior to installing any disk encryption utility is strongly recommended.

  • The computer must be connected to a university network or have an active Internet connection during the installation process in order for it to complete successfully.

Download the installation files

  1. Open the Enterprise Whole Disk Encryption share on Austin Disk to download the installer package. If a "Permission Denied" error occurs, please contact the ITS Help and Service Desk at 512-475-9400 to arrange SecureDoc access.

  2. After logging in, go to your respective department folder and locate the SDMacintosh.pkg installer file.

  3. Copy the installer to your local drive.

Run the installer

Note: It is recommended not to run an installer under generic named accounts such as "Administrator", "Admin," or "User." Running the installer through a personal account will minimize user name collisions that result in client device misplacement within the SecureDoc console.

  1. Start the installer by double-clicking on the SDMacintosh.pkg file.

  2. When prompted, enter your administrator credentials.

  3. Click Restart when the installation is complete.

  4. After the computer boots up again, you will be prompted to restart again. Click OK.

  5. After this reboot, the encryption process will begin.

  6. Encryption may take several hours to complete depending on hard drive size, CPU speed, and available memory.

    Note: To maximize disk conversion efficiency temporarily disable sleep or hibernation modes. Computers entering sleep or hibernation will resume the encryption process when woken.

  7. Once the encryption is finished, you will be prompted with a message. Click OK.

  8. Click Yes to reboot the computer again.

  9. After rebooting, your Mac will automatically use autoboot to log in to SecureDoc and will then prompt you for your normal Mac login credentials.

    Note: You can use the SecureDoc Control Center, the key icon on the right-hand side of the menu bar, to make modifications.

Now my Mac hibernates!

The SecureDoc client installation changes the hibernate mode on Macs.

There is currently no option in the installer to stop this change, but it is possible to turn hibernation mode off after the installation by submitting the following command in Terminal:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3
