Setting Up Email - Outlook XP and 2003

Patching Outlook XP And 2003

Make sure that you have the latest service pack for patching your version of Outlook. This procedure will not work if you do not have a fully patched system.

NOTE: You must use Internet Explorer for this procedure.

  1. Go to the Office Update site.

  2. Click the Check for Updates button.

  3. Install the updates as prompted.

  4. Restart your computer to complete the installation process.

Configuring Outlook XP And 2003

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. From the Tools menu, select Email Accounts.

  3. Under Email, select Add a new email account.

  4. Select either IMAP or POP depending on how you want to set up your account, and click Next.

  5. In the Internet Email Settings {IMAP|POP} window, enter your information in the following fields:

    • User Information

      • Enter a display name (such as "UT Mail" or "My Account") in the Your name field.

      • Enter your UMBS email address (username@mail.utexas.edu) in the Email address field.

    • Server Information

      • Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Incoming mail server {IMAP|POP} field.

      • Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.

    • Logon Information

      • Enter your UMBS email user name in the User Name field.

      • Enter your password in the Password field.

      • Confirm that Logon using secure password authentication is not selected.

  6. Click More Settings.

Securing Outlook XP And 2003

  1. In the Internet Email Settings window, select the Outgoing Servers tab.

  2. Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.

  3. Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.

    Caution: For UMBS email do not use the Log on using option because your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending email.

  4. Select the Advanced tab.

  5. At Incoming server, select This server requires an encrypted [or secure] connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is okay.

  6. At Outgoing server select This server requires an encrypted [or secure] connection (SSL).

  7. Enter "25" in the Port field.

    NOTE:If SBC or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) won't let you send mail to a remote server using port 25, enter "587" in the Port field.

  8. Click OK to close the window.

  9. In the Email Accounts window, click Finish.

  10. Close Outlook and restart it for your selections to take effect.
