Setting Up Email - Outlook 2007

Patching Outlook 2007

Make sure that you have the latest service pack for patching your version of Outlook. This procedure will not work if you do not have a fully patched system.

NOTE: You must use Internet Explorer for this procedure.

  1. Go to the Office Update site.

  2. Click the Check for Updates button.

  3. Install the updates as prompted.

  4. Restart your computer to complete the installation process.

Configuring Outlook 2007 for On-Campus Use

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.

  3. Under the Email tab, select New.

  4. Select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP and click Next.

  5. Enter your name in the Your Name field.

  6. Enter your UMBS email address (username@mail.utexas.edu) in the Email address field.

  7. Enter your password in the Password and Retype Password fields.

  8. Click Finish.

Configuring Outlook 2007 for Off-Campus Use

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.

  3. Under the Email tab, select New....

  4. Select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP and click Next.

  5. Check Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.

  6. Select Internet Email and click Next.

  7. In the Internet Email Settings window, enter your information in the following fields:

  8. Enter your name in the Your Name field.

  9. Enter your UMBS email address (username@mail.utexas.edu) in the Email address field.

  10. Select POP3 or IMAP in the Account Type field.

  11. Enter "mail.utexas.edu" in the Incoming mail server field.

  12. Enter_ "mail.utexas.edu_"** ** in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.

  13. Enter your UMBS email user name in the User Name field.

  14. Enter your password in the Password field.

  15. Confirm that Logon using secure password authentication is not selected.

  16. Click More Settings.

  17. In the Internet Email Settings window, select the Outgoing Servers tab.

  18. Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.

  19. Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is checked.

    Caution: For UMBS email do not use the Log on using option because your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending email.

  20. Select the Advanced tab.

  21. Check This server requires an encrypted [or secure] connection (SSL). The port number will change to 995, which is okay.

  22. In the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field, enter 587.

  23. Under Outgoing server, select TLS from the drop-down labeled Use the following type of encrypted connection.

  24. Click OK to close the window.

  25. In the Email Accounts window, click Next, and then Finish.

  26. Close Outlook and restart it for your selections to take effect.
