UMBS E-Mail

Setting Up Email - Windows Mail

Configuring Windows Mail

  1. To open Windows Mail on your computer, click Start, select All Programs, select Windows Mail.

  2. In the Internet Connection Wizard Display name field, enter your name and click Next.

  3. In the Email address field, enter your UMBS email address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu) and click Next.

  4. Select either POP3 or IMAP from the incoming mail server drop-down list depending on how you want to set up your account.

  5. Enter "mail.utexas.edu" as both the Incoming mail and Outgoing mail server names.

  6. Enter your Account name and Password in the appropriate fields.

  7. Verify that ** Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)** is not selected.

  8. Click Next.

  9. Click Finish.

Securing Windows Mail

  1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.

  2. In the Internet Accounts dialog, select the Mail tab.

  3. Select your UMBS email account and click Properties.

  4. Select the Servers tab.

  5. Make sure that Outgoing Mail (SMTP) is set to mail.utexas.edu

  6. Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked.

  7. Under Outgoing Mail Server, ensure that My server requires authentication is checked.

  8. Click the Settings button.

  9. Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.

Caution: For UMBS email, do not use the "Log on using" option. If you choose this option your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending email.

  1. Select the Advanced tab.

  2. At Outgoing mail, select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

NOTE: Windows Mail does not support the use of alternate ports. If SBC or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) won't let you send mail to a remote server using port 25, you will have to switch to a different email program, such as Thunderbird.

  1. At Incoming mail select This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is okay.

  2. Click OK.

  3. Click Close.

  4. Close Windows Mail and restart it for the change to take effect.

NOTE: Send a test email from another account to your UMBS email account to make sure everything works.
