General Requirements
The UT-LabMan system consists of a number of components that communicate over a TCP/IP network. Most components require static IP addresses be assigned for their computer.
The UT-LabMan system requires a central server running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows 2003. Additional administrative stations running Microsoft Windows (2000, XP or Vista) may be used to manage UT-LabMan's functions remotely.
Laboratory workstations can consist of a mix of Macintosh and Windows-based microcomputers. More specific client system requirements are listed below.
The UT-LabMan system does not require a central validation host, but can use one if present. At UT Austin, UT-LabMan can validate against the central UT-EID system. At other institutions, validation hosts using Active Directory, LDAP, and MS Domain can be used.† Please contact us if you use other central validation methods.
System Requirements
- UT-LabMan Server - The UT-LabMan Server runs as a system-level service. As such, it requires Windows 2000 or above (e.g. not Windows 98), though it can run on either workstation or server versions of the OS. Note: A Windows Server operating as the lab's file server may also host the UT-LabMan Server component.
- UT-LabMan Console - The UT-LabMan Console is designed to run on Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT 3.5 or higher (Workstation or Server) systems. This component does not require a computer with a static IP, and can therefore easily be used over dial-up, broadband, wireless, and other connections.
- UT-LabMan WaitList - The UT-LabMan WaitList is designed to run on Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows XP operating systems.
- UT-LabMan Assignment Display - UT-LabMan Assignment Display is designed to run on Apple Macintosh computers running Mac OS 8 or later, including Mac OS X in the Classic environment. Optional add-ons for this component include:
- A large screen television (25" to 34" direct-view, CRT, standard definition) and computer-to-TV video output.
- Additional video card(s) for multiple screen support
Note: Some video cards, such as the ATI All In Wonder cards, provide NTSC composite video and S-Video output for TVs. Some Macs also have video output capabilities. If possible, it is suggested that you first evaluate any system for suitability, since a number of factors affect the quality and usability of the image displayed on a television screen.
- UT-LabMan Windows Pro Client - The UT-LabMan Windows Client is designed to run on Microsoft Windows XP systems.
- UT-LabMan Windows Vista Client (in testing) - The UT-LabMan Windows Client is designed to run on Microsoft Windows Vista systems.
- UT-LabMan Mac OS X Client - The UT LabMan Macintosh Client is designed to run on Macs running Mac OS X versions 10.1 and later.
- UT-LabMan Windows Client - The UT-LabMan Windows Client is designed to run on Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and ME systems.
- UT-LabMan Macintosh Client - The UT LabMan Macintosh Client is designed to run on Macs running Mac OS versions 8 and 9.
