LabMan

WebView Service

The WebView service lets lab administrators publish the current status of their UT-LabMan labs as interactive maps and statistics viewable from any Web browser. Potential lab users can benefit by checking for available workstations and avoiding long waiting lists. Lab administrators can easily monitor the status of their labs on computers where the Console software is not available.

To have your lab added to the WebView service, visit the WebView Service Application.

Secure Public Access

The security of UT-LabMan labs is a principal design goal of WebView:

  • The address of your UT-LabMan Server is never disclosed to the WebView user. WebView Web applications handle all communications with your UT-LabMan Server.
  • The load to your UT-LabMan Server is negligible. WebView collects status data from your UT-LabMan Server only when a Web request comes in, and then caches the data for a few minutes to insulate your UT-LabMan Server from high traffic or that one user requesting multiple views.
  • You can still run firewall software to protect your UT-LabMan Server. WebView is hosted on the UT Austin main Web site, so you need only allow queries from this host cluster.
  • User names are not retrieved. WebView is for displaying lab information only.
  • WebView access is opt-in. You must provide us with specific information before WebView can be configured to access your UT-LabMan Server(s).
  • You decide if or how you will let others know about your lab's WebView access. We do not publish a list of labs available via WebView.

WebView is a service provided to labs running the UT-LabMan management software by Information Technology Services at The University of Texas at Austin.

If you would like your facility's status presented on the web, please complete the WebView request form.
