Listproc Lists and List Processors
Please note: The Listproc-based mailing list service will be retired on October 14, 2008. If you are a list owner, please be sure to migrate your list to the new UT Lists.
Mailing lists are used as forums for teaching, collaboration, discussion, entertainment, announcements and more. A message sent to a list will appear in each subscriber's mailbox, with the sender's name in the "from" line.
List owners:
- can control whether replies automatically go to the entire list or just to the original sender.
- can moderate and approve postings to the list or let all messages be posted.
- can have all messages archived on the server machine, thus keeping a permanent record of all communications.
Many other options are also available.
A list processor is a software system for distributing mail to a large number of people at once. The software functioning as the list processor on the ITS system named lists.cc.utexas.edu is Listproc from the Corporation for Research and Educational Networking (CREN), a consortium of educational organizations.
The list processor is an automatic program that requires you to send very specific commands. These commands are processed by a computer system, not by a human, and must appear in the text of an e-mail message with the "Subject" line left blank.
