Setting Up Your Treo 650 for Mobile Access

You can use the VersaMail program and the Exchange ActiveSync software on your Treo to make a wireless connection to your Austin Exchange Messaging Service (AEMS) mailbox and to synchronize your Treo's e-mail and calendar with the one on the server. You can only configure one account at a time on your Treo to use Exchange ActiveSync.

NOTE: You must have an active data plan with your service provider to connect your mobile device to your AEMS account.

Connecting to Your AEMS Account

These instructions tell VersaMail how to find your AEMS account, connect to it, and synchronize your e-mail and calendar.

  1. Press the Home button.
  2. Open VersaMail. You may be prompted to do initial setup. If so, select Continue.
  3. Press the Menu button.
  4. Select Accounts.
  5. From the Accounts menu, select Account Setup.
  6. Do one of the following: 
    • Select the existing account (probably named VersaMail) and click Edit, or
    • Click New if there is no existing account to create another account.
  7. In the Account Name field, enter a name for the account. This can be any name you like.
  8. From the Mail Service drop-down menu, select Exchange ActiveSync.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Enter your EID in the form "austin/EID." If your e-mail name is js1001, for example, you would enter "austin/js1001".
  11. If you are not prompted to enter the password, select the Password field.
  12. In the New Password field, enter your password. Caution: The characters will be visible on the screen. Select OK.
  13. Select Next.
  14. Enter your complete AEMS e-mail address in the form username@austin.utexas.edu. You may have to highlight and delete some characters that appear automatically. Substitute your AEMS user name for username.
  15. In the Mail Server field, enter "wmail.austin.utexas.edu". Select Next.
  16. Select Done.
  17. When you see the notice about the local e-mail and calendar being replaced, select Yes to replace the local copies.
  18. If the application does not automatically exit from Account Setup, select OK to exit.

You have now completed the configuration process. To synchronize your e-mail and calendar:

  1. Select Sync.
  2. If you are prompted about whether to connect to the Internet, select Yes.

    Note: If you have a lot of e-mail, the synchronization process could take some time.

Automatically Synchronizing Your E-mail and Calendar

You can configure your Treo to synchronize your e-mail and calendar automatically on a regular schedule.

  1. While VersaMail is open, press the Menu button.
  2. Select Options, then select Preferences.
  3. Select Auto Sync.
  4. Select the Sync Automatically option.
  5. Enter the Frequency, Start Time, End Time, and Days that you want your Treo to synchronize your e-mail and calendar, then select OK.
  6. Select Get Mail to synchronize your e-mail and calendar immediately.

Your Treo will now synchronize your e-mail and calendar items automatically on the schedule you indicated. To synchronize at any time, use the Sync button.
