Working with Departments to Expand the Public Network
All publicly accessible wired ports and wireless access points on the university campus must be engineered, registered, and operated by ITS, as detailed in the Public Network Policy.
Given the essential educational, administrative, and institutional applications UTnet supports, ITS has a significant responsibility to ensure the reliability and availability of the campus network. By requiring that each wired port or wireless access point on the campus be registered as part of the Public Network and authenticated via the Authentication System, ITS can ensure that all university network and computing resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Designing Public Wired and Wireless Access on Campus
To provide reliable and secure networking at the university, departments that want to set up wired Ethernet ports or wireless network access points in their area(s) must consult with ITS-Networking. Staff will help you design the best solution for your area at no charge to your department. However, departments are responsible for purchasing the necessary equipment. Once a design schema has been agreed upon, ITS will order, engineer, register, operate, and manage all publicly accessible wired ports or wireless access points. E-mail networking@its.utexas.edu to request consultation services.
Students, faculty, and staff who wish to request the addition of wired or wireless access points in an area should contact the department responsible for the building area.
Maintaining the Public Network
ITS network support staff are available at all times to assist in diagnosing and repairing network failures. Because all wired and wireless access to the Public Network is registered and authenticated, ITS will be able to notify quickly the owner or operator of an improperly configured or malfunctioning network interface if it interferes with normal network operations. Please e-mail networking@its.utexas.edu to request maintenance or troubleshooting services.
