Bandwidth Usage Notifications

Have you ever unknowingly run out of bandwidth and had to purchase extra to get you through the week? To help you keep track of your bandwidth, you can use bandwidth usage e-mail notices available on the External Bandwidth Quota page.

By default, e-mail will be sent to your official university e-mail address when:

  • You have used all of your first-class bandwidth
  • You have very high upload activity

You can also set up your account to notify you when you have used a certain percentage of your bandwidth.

Notification Options

There are three notification options you can set up on the External Bandwidth Quota page. You can choose to receive as many notifications as you like, or none at all.

I have used X% of my bandwidth - Choose this option to be notified when you have used a certain percentage (user specified) of your total available bandwidth for the week.

I have used all of my first-class bandwidth - Choose this option to be notified when you have used all of your first-class bandwidth. You will still be able to access the Internet using the second-class network, but it will be much slower. If you run out of first-class bandwidth, you can purchase more in TX Shop.

My upload activity is high/very high/extreme - Choose this option to be notified when the amount of data you upload is significantly more than the amount of data you download. This can be a sign that a P2P application has been left on or that your computer has been infected with a virus. The triggers for each of the three options are shown in the following table.

Upload Activity Options
Option Trigger for Notification
High Upload:Download Ratio > 3:1
Upload Minimum = 100 MB
Very High Upload:Download Ratio > 5:1
Upload Minimum = 100 MB
Extreme Upload:Download Ratio > 20:1
Upload Minimum = 200 MB
