Students, Faculty, Staff and Official Visitors Whose Devices Won't Work on 'restricted.utexas.edu'

By policy, students, faculty, staff and official visitors are required to use the 'restricted.utexas.edu' wireless network. Most modern devices have hardware and software support that allow them to connect to 'restricted.utexas.edu.' However, some older devices do not, particularly older phones and PDAs. If you have tried to set up to connect to 'restricted.utexas.edu' but you still cannot connect after working with your technical support coordinator or the Help Desk, you can complete an exception form and use the 'guest.utexas.edu' network when you are using that device.

The iPhone is known to not work on the UT wireless network.

You must log into the 'guest.utexas.edu' wireless network by opening a window in a Web browser. Attempting to access the network through an e-mail client or other network application will not redirect you to the Authentication System. (If you are not redirected automatically from a Web page, please contact the ITS Help Desk.)

  1. Complete the exception process.
  2. Make sure your Web browser is configured correctly:
    • Enable cookies for the PNA domain (pna.utexas.edu).
    • Enable JavaScript for the PNA domain (pna.utexas.edu).
    • Disable any pop-up blocking utilities OR set your Web browser to allow pop-up windows for the PNA domain (pna.utexas.edu).
  3. Connect to the 'guest.utexas.edu' wireless network.
  4. Open a Web browser. The browser automatically redirects to the login page.
  5. Enter your UT EID and your password to log in.
  6. Select the appropriate status of your computer (this affects your security):
    • Select I share this computer if you are using a shared computer, such as a laptop checked out from a library or an office computer to which multiple users have access.
    • Select I do not share this computer if you are using your personal computer or one to which only you have access.
  7. Click Login. You are directed back to the Web page you tried to open, and the Popup Window opens in the background. Be sure to leave the Popup Window open. This ensures that your credentials are maintained and you continue to be authorized.

You can log into only one computer at a time on the Public Network. If you attempt to log into more than one computer, your last session will be terminated.
