WPA2 Upgrade to Wireless Network

An upgrade to the restricted.utexas.edu wireless network on campus will take place on Tuesday, August 5, 2008. The upgrade will add WPA2 protocol functionality to the restricted network, in addition to continuing the network's current support for WPA.

WPA2 is a security protocol that can improve the stability and reliability of connections for wireless users, as well as offering stronger network security. Wireless-certified devices released within the past two years usually include WPA2 support.

For most users, the change will be transparent, in which case no actions are required. Many devices, including those running on Mac OS X, will automatically select the WPA2 protocol. To benefit from the new protocol, users with devices running on some versions of Windows XP may have to re-run the installer for restricted.utexas.edu.

Users with older devices or wireless cards might not be able to use the WPA2 protocol, but the devices should still connect to restricted.utexas.edu through WPA. A limited number of older devices will not be able to access the upgraded network at all; those users will need to complete an exception form to use guest.utexas.edu for the affected devices.

Users who are connected to the restricted.utexas.edu network during the August 5 upgrade may need to reboot their devices or reconnect to the network afterwards. If you encounter any problems with accessing the network after the upgrade, contact the ITS Help Desk.
