Daylight Saving Time 2007 Issues

ITS offers advice on applications and operating systems that may affect you.

Visit the Daylight Saving Time 2007 Web site to update your applications
and operating system before March 11!

To comply with the U.S. Energy Policy Act, this year’s Daylight Saving Time (DST) will start three weeks earlier (March 11) and end one week later (November 4) than in 2006. This change affects many operating systems and applications that interact with dates and time, including:

  • Microsoft Windows XP (SP1 and SP2)
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows 2000 Professional and Server
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2007
  • Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac
  • Macintosh OS X
  • Many mobile devices, including BlackBerry handhelds, Palm Treos, HP iPAQs, and Windows CE and Mobile devices

Different applications are affected by the DST change in different ways, but the most common problem occurs in calendaring applications. Events scheduled between March 11 and April 1 may appear one hour later than originally scheduled; anything scheduled between October 28 and November 4 appear one hour earlier than originally scheduled. In addition, some system clocks may be off by one hour during the extended DST dates.

To address these changes to DST, many vendors have released patches or upgrades. ITS has created a Web site on Daylight Saving Time 2007 that provides instructions and links to patches and updates for a variety of operating systems and applications. Update your computers and mobile devices appropriately before March 11 to minimize any affects this Daylight Saving Time issue may have on you and your schedule!
