Webmail Upgrade Includes New Features, Easier Login Process

On January 12, 2009, the latest version of Webmail officially moved into production. This upgrade has been available for users to preview since August 2008. Now the new version displays by default when you log on to Webmail at webmail.utexas.edu.

Webmail offers new features and improvements in this version, including:

  • Threaded message support, so you can follow conversations with the same subject line
  • Message previews, so you can read the first lines of a message before opening it
  • Keyboard shortcuts for frequently used commands
  • A calendar application you can use to keep track of appointments

In addition, if you are accessing Webmail on campus or from certain Austin domains (Time Warner, SBC), you no longer need to use your UT EID to log on to Webmail. However, you must remember your e-mail account username and password.

After you log on to the new version of Webmail, you can import your address book from the old version by clicking the Migrate link in the left sidebar. If you already tried the new version at new.webmail.utexas.edu, those settings will now appear at webmail.utexas.edu.

The old version of Webmail is currently scheduled to be available at old.webmail.utexas.edu until February 2, 2009, to help users make a smooth transition to the upgraded version. You're encouraged to move to the new version as soon as you can.

Please note that the new version of Webmail does not support AEMS (austin.utexas.edu) e-mail accounts. If you want to view your AEMS e-mail messages through a Web browser, use Outlook Web Access.

Contact the ITS Help Desk if you encounter any problems with the new version of Webmail.
