IT Forecast Examines Technology Trends

The 2009 Information Technology (IT) Forecast is now available on the Information Technology Services (ITS) Web site as a PDF. ITS researched and compiled this report, which discusses important IT-related trends and how they affect the university community. The report also explains how the university, and specifically ITS, will address many key technology issues in 2009.

The trends and issues discussed in the report include:

  • Increases in Software as a Service (SaaS) and cloud computing use.
  • User expectations that university technology will behave like technology solutions available off-campus.
  • The need for collaboration technologies, as well as identity and authorization tools, to manage research collaboration between faculty at distant institutions.
  • More open-source applications available in new functional areas.
  • Increases in the number and functionality of mobile computing devices, and how this affects the campus network infrastructure and development resources.

In addition, the IT Forecast examines the Top Ten IT Issues list that EDUCAUSE published in 2008. EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association that promotes information technology in higher education. The issues on the top ten list included security, identity and access management, disaster recovery, change management, teaching and learning methods, and training issues.

ITS produced the IT Forecast as part of the ITS Strategic Plan. The IT Forecast helps fulfill the plan's Leadership goal, which is to provide a vision for positive change and to share and exemplify best practices.
