New Option to Supplement PNA Bandwidth

ITS is pleased to announce a new option for students who want to obtain additional bandwidth on the Public Network. Starting May 27, 2009, Tiered Public Network Access (PNA) will be available to provide subscribers with an additional 4 GB of bandwidth each week for $10/long semester. The price is prorated for the shorter summer semester.

Tiered PNA is a cost-effective option for students who regularly exceed their default 500 MB/week bandwidth allocations. In the past, the only choice for additional bandwidth was to purchase a onetime allocation of 2 GB, recently upgraded from 1 GB, through TXShop.

"Our new Tiered PNA services provide the freedom for individual students to choose how they wish to use the network. No student fees are increased, because only those who wish to consume more bandwidth pay for subscriptions,” says William Green, director of ITS Networking.

“With this system, ITS is able to plan for and negotiate longer term bandwidth at a lower price versus instant bandwidth through TxShop. Over time we plan to offer additional tiers of bandwidth for purchase.”

Students living in the residence halls must continue to use Resnet subscriptions for additional bandwidth and are not eligible to sign up for the Tiered PNA service. Resnet fees fund bandwidth and network infrastructure, such as wireless access points, in the residence halls. Tiered PNA fees only fund additional bandwidth from the university’s Internet provider.
