Moving to the Office 365 Cloud

Beginning June 3, 2013, some exciting enhancements are coming to the Austin Exchange Messaging Service (AEMS). AEMS is UT Austin’s Microsoft Exchange environment. With review and approval by the Operational IT Committee in IT governance, campus is migrating from an on-premise AEMS to Microsoft’s hosted cloud solution, Office365. For people using AEMS, your email addresses, calendaring and contacts will stay the same.

The benefits of this migration include:

  • 25 GB mailbox size (up from 2 GB)
  • High availability with a 99.9% uptime guarantee
  • Improved Outlook Web App experience
  • Continuous data replication in geographically diverse data centers which improves our back-up and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Built-in, automatic upgrades

UT Austin will not pay to use Office365, thanks to UT System’s master contract with Microsoft. The migration also means that the significant costs of both replacing the aging AEMS hardware environment and upgrading the software in the coming year will be avoided.

Please refer to the newly created Office365 website. General information and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are available and will be updated over the course of the migration.

Everyone on campus who currently uses AEMS will be migrated in phased groups during the summer. The entire migration process should take about 8-10 weeks. Little to no disruption for people using AEMS is anticipated. Information will be provided throughout the transition process.
