Familiar ITS Services Now Available on the iPhone

Friday, July 11, 2008, marks the release of Apple’s iPhone 2.0 software. Coming standard on iPhone 3Gs and available by upgrade to users of older iPhones, this is the most significant update to the iPhone since its release one year ago.

If you are a member of The University of Texas at Austin community and own an iPhone, there are a number of familiar ITS services available to users with the update installed. Services newly available to the iPhone include:

Of these new capabilities, the two with greatest impact on university iPhone users are ‘restricted.utexas.edu’ access and Austin Exchange Messaging Service support.

Previously, iPhone users were restricted to using the ‘guest.utexas.edu’ network on campus. These connections were plagued with constant prompts to reconnect and a limited area of wireless availability. iPhone users are now able to connect to the ‘restricted.utexas.edu’ network to take advantage of the increased reliability, security, and speeds by creating a wireless profile through a simple Web application developed by ITS.

iPhone 2.0 also offers support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, unavailable to iPhone users up to this point. Users of the Austin Exchange Messaging Service are now able to access their Exchange accounts, including e-mail, calendars, and address lists from their iPhone. Setup is simple and can be completed through the same Web application used to create ‘restricted.utexas.edu’ profiles.

We recognize the increasing popularity of the iPhone and will continue to look for new ways to improve your iPhone experience with ITS services.
