As part of the Web Central Services Retirement project, the ITS website will be retired. Information about IT services will be replaced by two new sites, IT@UT and UT ServiceNow, and ITS departmental information will be migrated to a new location. All changes will be completed by 7/28/2016.

University Data Center Tabletop Exercise

August 30, 2010

As part of the planning process for the move to the University Data Center (UDC), the project team recently conducted a tabletop exercise. The exercise walked through moving a representative technology stack of actual Information Technology Services (ITS) services to the new UDC over the December break. Subject matter experts from ITS Systems, UDC, Applications and Networking were guided through the process and asked to discuss what needs to be done in what order, by whom, and how long it might take for tasks to be accomplished. Key stakeholders were invited to observe and contribute throughout the process.

The exercise was very successful in capturing tasks, responsibilities, risks and time estimates and in identifying prerequisites, resources and information critical to moving services successfully. The exercise was also helpful in identifying the appropriate order of activities for taking down and restoring services and systems. This type of coordinated effort will help ensure a smooth and successful transition to the new UDC. Similar tabletop exercises are planned for current co-location customers to provide insight into the level of collaboration that will go into moving their equipment into the new facility. Migration to the new data center will take place over an extended period from October 2010 through May 2011, with the largest migration occurring during the December 2010 holiday break.
