Welcoming Students Back to Campus

August 31, 2010

Information Technology Services (ITS) is pleased to welcome students back to campus! To be sure the new semester starts off well for everyone, here are some of the things we've been doing:

  • During Mooov-In 2010, ITS staff were available in Jester and Kinsolving residence halls to help students resolve IT issues as they established life on campus. More than 60 ITS Help Desk and Networking staff worked from Friday, August 20 through Monday, August 23 responding to approximately 2,500 contacts from students. Questions and concerns were answered in-person, and through calls, emails and chats. Here's a photo gallery of what it was like during those first few days.
  • The ID Center had representatives on-site Wednesday, August 18, to help with Orientation in Gregory Gym. While there were some minor hiccups, overall everything went very well. 700+ IDs were processed, which helped alleviate some of the traffic at the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) ID Center, where 400+ IDs were processed the same day.
  • The Resnet Wireless Project was completed on schedule, ensuring that students living in university housing now have access to full wireless coverage in the residence halls. ITS received approval from Housing and Food for the $1 million infrastructure upgrade to be completed this summer. Though the schedule was aggressive, staff pulled together to make this happen in a big way.
  • In addition, end-of-summer network maintenance was completed as planned. Upgraded core routers, data center routers and firewalls, re-allocated wireless address spaces, and upgraded wireless controllers are all behind-the-scenes tasks necessary for the smooth functioning of the campus networks.
