Annual Report of Public Network Access Data Highlights Trends Among Campus Users
The 2008 Information Technology Services analysis of Public Network Access Usage Data is now available. The report is compiled from transaction logs across a 133-day period covering the Spring 2008 semester.
Highlights from the report include:
- A 64% increase in “connect hours” since the Spring 2007 semester; 8 million connect hours were logged in Spring 2008.
- A 30% increase in the average number of user connections and a 26% increase in mean connection time. This reflects a trend toward more frequent sessions and longer sessions.
- 16,000 unique users each day of the semester, with 8,000 peak simultaneous users.
- 98.8% of the connections logged were wireless, leaving about 1.2% of all connections as wired connections.
- 94.3% of the wireless connections used 802.1x for authentication (SSID: ‘restricted.utexas.edu’) and 5.8% used Web redirect for authentication (SSID: ‘guest.utexas.edu’).
