Improvements Increase Network Reliability and Uptime
Over the summer, Information Technology Services (ITS) made improvements to the campus network to increase network reliability and uptime. These improvements are the latest in a series of projects undertaken to ensure reliable Internet access on campus.
The most significant improvement to the campus network this summer is the addition of a second, redundant connection to the Internet provided by the University of Texas System - Office of Telecommunication Services (OTS). As a result, Internet connections are now active in both Network Operations Centers and are served by Internet Service Providers in different cities. In the event of a failure of one connection central routers will automatically switch to the remaining connection, ensuring continued access.
Combined with other improvements, estimated availability for the campus network backbone has increased to 99.98% and availability for external connectivity has increased to 99.95%. As a result, you should see no more than 1.75 hours of downtime per year for on-campus connections and no more than 4.5 hours of downtime per year for off-campus connections.
