August 2010 Security Breaches at All Time High
September 17, 2010
Recent announcements regarding UT System's increased commitment to information security on all campuses come at a time when targeted attacks are on the rise. The August 2010 Information Security Office (ISO) Incident Summary for our campus gives an idea of the scale of these efforts:
“This August yielded the highest number of campus security breaches ever for the month of August (using data collected since 2001). The ISO reported 62% more compromises this year as compared to August 2009, which had previously been the ‘busiest’ August on record.”
This is a reminder that UT Austin's intellectual assets and personal identities are seriously threatened in a constant and ongoing way. The efforts of the ISO do much to keep University assets protected, but vigilance on the part of the campus community is necessary to be sure these attacks remain unsuccessful. Students should also be aware that over 70% of the overall compromises reported are associated with student-owned systems.
