ITS to Offer Hard Drive and Electronic Media Destruction
Information Technology Services (ITS) and the Information Security Office (ISO) have begun offering an ongoing free service to destroy UT-owned hard drives and other electronic media for faculty and staff. The Information Desk in the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) will accept electronic media at any time during regular business hours with valid UT identification.
The contents of old hard drives and media are often unknown and might include sensitive Category-I data. The most effective way to ensure the complete removal of this data is to physically destroy these materials. Demolition of the materials dropped off at the Information Desk will be handled by certified vendors to ensure data removal and the safe disposal of debris.
In the past, ISO hosted successful special events where faculty and staff could drop off hard drives and other electronic media to be destroyed. ISO reported that more than 3400 hard drives were collected at the past two events.
If you want to use this service, you must uninstall the hard drive from your computer before you bring it to the Information Desk. The ITS Help Desk staff will not remove hard drives from computers. Talk to your Technical Support Contact if you need help uninstalling your hard drive.
The Information Desk will accept UT-owned:
- Hard drives
- CDs and DVDs
- Floppy disks
- Reel-to-reel tapes
- Flash drives
- Flash memory cards
- Any other electronic media
The Information Desk will not accept:
- Paper manuals
- Other technical books
- Hard drives or other electronic media not owned by UT
This service is offered to comply with State of Texas Department of Information Resources mandates. If you have any questions regarding data security and removal, please contact ISO or the ITS Help Desk.
This service is available to UT faculty and staff at no additional cost.
