Laptops and other digital devices are ubiquitous in the classroom. While technology is certainly an aid and asset to learning, ground rules for usage during class can ensure a positive experience for everyone throughout the semester.
Consider these suggestions for managing digital distractions in your classroom:
- Set standards early such as disabling sound, staying on task, being considerate of classmates and remembering why you are in the classroom.
- Establish "digital-free times" when everyone must close their laptops, turn-off their phones and put away their PDAs.
- Do not allow laptops and cellphones during tests.
- Be clear about the consequences of inappropriate usage and encourage students to speak directly to one another when they have concerns.
- Designate times and ways in which it is okay to use laptops and cell phones in the classroom or on assignments.
