WebSpace Retirement and Alternative Services

November 1, 2013

Information Technology Services (ITS) is charged by IT governance with re-evaluating major service offerings and finding better, more efficient and cost-effective solutions. WebSpace, a legacy online file storage and sharing service, is a case in point. Over the past year, security vulnerabilities found in WebSpace were not addressed promptly by the vendor. This caused ITS and the Information Security Office (ISO) to take drastic measures to protect the University’s sensitive data. Because customers were inconvenienced and confidence in the vendor is low, ITS - in conjunction with the ISO - plans to retire WebSpace on May 19, 2014. This proposal has been endorsed by IT governance.

Current ITS service offerings make WebSpace redundant. For most use cases, more robust and secure alternatives are available and include:

  • File Sharing
    • For current faculty and staff - UTBox cloud based file sharing service for business use. UTBox is approved secure by ISO and offers 25 GB (gigabyte) of storage. Instructions on how to migrate content from WebSpace are available.
    • For students - Google Drive (a feature of UTmail accounts) for file sharing, collaboration, and storage. Google Drive also offers 25 GB of storage.
  • Web Publishing Options
    • Account holders using WebSpace for web publishing can use Google Drive and Google Sites associated with UTmail accounts to host web pages. The University Blog Service also provides web publishing using the WordPress platform.
  • Green Output
    • Austin Disk is the new default destination for Green Output beginning October 14, 2013.
