ITS Offers Good Stuff for Cheap--Oct. 17, 2002-- Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch? Or, at least, a greatly reduced lunch? While Information Technology Service (ITS) works behind the scenes to provide many vital and innovative services, we also offer an array of products that are real bargains. Below is a sampling of products and services that give our customers the most bang for their buck. BevoWareBevoWare provides the software you need to protect your computer from viruses, improve the security of your connections, browse the Web, read and send e-mail, use the campus printing system and more. Current UT students, faculty and staff can download BevoWare components, updates and upgrades online for free. (For current UT faculty and staff, the fee for BevoWare has been waived through May 2003.) The CD version of BevoWare is also available to current students, faculty and staff as an optional $5 purchase from the Campus Computer Store. WebSpaceLooking for a place to store important files? Take advantage of WebSpace, a file storage system that provides 75 megabytes of disk space to all registered students. You can use this space to store copies of important documents (i.e., homework, notes, papers, theses, dissertations, graphics) or publish a personal home page. WebSpace users can share files with a group or individuals, and perform personal Web publishing via a Web content folder. All of these tasks are accessible through a Web interface that allows easy access for uploading and downloading files from any computer on the Internet that has a browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, etc. For more information on WebSpace, visit http://www.utexas.edu/its/webspace/ or https://webspace.utexas.edu (UT EID required). Help Desk/Consulting ServicesIn these busy days, who has time for computer problems? If your system goes on the blink, free help is only a phone call away. The ITS Help Desk provides free computer assistance for students, faculty and staff. Call 475-9400 or visit their Web site to complete a help request form. Free individual consulting appointments can be scheduled when assistance is needed in data management, mathematical or statistical software, instructional technology, and desktop, Unix and Windows systems. Computer TrainingThe ITS Training group offers computer training courses on topics including Web publishing, the MS Office Suite, databases, and statistical applications. Lecture-style and hands-on short courses are free to students, faculty, and staff. Fee-based, in-depth courses are offered in conjunction with the Division of Continuing and Extended Education at the Thompson Conference Center. Online handouts and tutorials are also available. Special learning opportunities for faculty include technology seminars cosponsored by the Center for Teaching Effectiveness. Information Technology (ITAC) fees provide funding support for the above services. Software DiscountsStudents, faculty and staff dont have to pay high prices to buy the latest and greatest software. ITS Campus Computer Store and Software Distribution & Sales comes to the rescue with low academic pricing on many of the hottest, new software packages (and some of the oldie but goodies too). ITS has finalized a Campus Agreement (MSCA) with Microsoft Corporation, giving University of Texas System (UTS) students, faculty, and staff access to Microsoft's popular computer software, including operating systems and desktop productivity tools. With this contract, every UTS student, faculty member, and staff employee will have access to the latest versions of this important suite of software, for use both on our campuses and in their homes. For more information, visit the Microsoft Campus Agreement pages. The Campus Computer Store offers great academic discounts on software from Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, Macromedia and others. For example, Microsoft Campus Enterprise Agreement software such as Microsoft Office costs only $5-$10/CD in the CD set. Macromedia Flash MX that normally retails for $390, is only $91 at the Campus Computer Store. Photoshop 7 sells for just $264, a great deal lower than the retail price of $610. You can also get great discounts on the newest operating systems such as Mac OS X and Windows XP. Software Distribution & Sales also offers Microsoft Campus Enterprise Agreement software. They provide academic pricing on statistical and mathematical software such as Maple, Mathematica and SAS, dissertation/thesis templates, virus protection software, Microsoft Campus Agreement software, Unix DEC software and much more.
