AntiVirus and Firewall Protection Software

Overview

ITS provides Symantec AntiVirus products for use on and off campus by students, faculty, and staff at The University of Texas at Austin. Please check out the BevoWare site form more details.

Cost and Eligibility

Symantec firewall and anti-virus software is available at no cost via Bevoware to UT Austin departments and colleges, as well as current students, faculty, and staff.

The university's agreement with Symantec provides access to the following products for students, faculty, and staff:

  • Symantec AntiVirus for Windows
  • Symantec Client Firewall for Windows
  • Norton AntiVirus for Mac OS
  • Norton Personal Firewall for Mac OS

The university's agreement with Symantec also provides the following additional products for departments:

  • All of the above
  • Symantec AntiVirus plus Content Filtering for Microsoft Exchange
  • Symantec AntiVirus plus Content Filtering for Domino
  • Symantec AntiVirus for SMTP Gateways
  • Symantec Web Security (for HTTP and FTP Gateways)
  • Symantec AntiVirus Server (for deployment of client installations)1
  • Symantec Client Firewall Administrator1
  • Symantec System Center management console1
  • Symantec LiveUpdate Administrator 1
  • Symantec Central Quarantine Server1

1 Symantec server products that provide client management and server administration are available on BevoWare in the Windows Server platform sections and are restricted to users with Active UT Austin Employee EIDs. Staff are no longer required to obtain authorization from the ITS Information Security Office in order to access these products, but we do strongly recommend that users contact their departmental IT staff or TSC before deploying any products that may adversely affect the installation of Symantec products in your area.

Please see the BevoWare web site for the latest version of Symantec products. As the list of known viruses and worms is constantly changing, you should check back frequently for updates.

Minor program updates and virus definition files can be automatically downloaded nightly by the LiveUpdate feature included in Symantec products.
