Anti-Virus Software

Campus Symantec Replacement Project

The Campus Symantec Replacement Project will implement a new campus anti-virus solution: Microsoft Forefront for Windows and ClamXav for Mac. These products will replace the Symantec and Norton anti-virus products, for which UT Austin is not renewing its license. After September 23, 2009, UT Austin affiliates will no longer be eligible to receive software updates from Symantec. The Frequently Asked Questions page provides additional details about the transition from Symantec products.

About the project

The project will provide the following deliverables (at a minimum):

  • For students, faculty and staff who manage their own computer updates (home or professional use): Symantec removal procedures and Microsoft Forefront and ClamXav anti-virus software packaged for installation, distributed through BevoWare. Posted June 1, 2009.
  • For the campus technical community: all relevant information, tools, training resources, best practices and procedures for removing Symantec AntiVirus and migrating managed clients to Microsoft Forefront and ClamXav. Posted July 15, 2009.
  • For ITS contracted and managed systems: replace Symantec AntiVirus with Microsoft Forefront or ClamXav. Due September 23, 2009.
  • Additional documentation will be provided for Forefront Exchange and SharePoint server products as ITS identifies relevant information about converting from Symantec. No deliverable date has been set for this documentation.

For the campus technical community

ITS has set up an online discussion forum for technical staff to ask questions and share information. Read more about the discussion forum.
