Apple Maintenance Program (AMP) FAQs
What happened to the Apple TAP program?
AMP replaced TAP in March 2005
AMP requires that my computer be at the current version. Mine is not. What should I do?
Contact our Apple sales rep, Andy Wisner (awisner@apple.com ). He will work with you to mitigate any upgrade costs/issues. Do not hesitate to ask for his help.
If I have AMP coverage for my office Mac is there any coverage for my personally-owned home system?
No. AMP has no home-use provision.
When I buy a new machine should I enroll it in this subscription program or should I buy AMP coverage with the computer?
If you have coverage you can roll over (transfer) to your new computer (e.g., you are replacing a computer with TAP/AMP subscription), then you probably want to use that existing coverage. If you don't have coverage to roll over, then you have a choice. You may include with your computer purchase a paid up front 3 year AMP agreement or may enroll in the UT Austin annual AMP subscription program. The cost is basically the same, one is paid up front and one is paid annually.
What if I subscribe this year but do not renew next year?
The AMP is a 36-month program. If you sign up in year one, then you must also renew in years two and three to continue using the Mac OS on your machine. If you do not renew, you must remove the Mac OS from the computer licensed under the subscription. In general, you will need to roll back your license to the version originally purchased for that computer.
What happens at the end of the three years for AMP?
You will have a perpetual license but you will need to remain part of a program such as AMP to continue to get updates/upgrades.
May I transfer the AMP coverage from one computer to another?
Yes, you may during the term of the Agreement. Remember that the first computer must revert back to its original license.
What if I replace the computer I licensed under the subscription?
When you replace your computer, you can roll forward (transfer) your AMP coverage onto it.
Must I buy the initial Mac OS license when I buy a Mac?
Yes, it is bundled with the computer. This is an upgrade program only.
May I run an older version of operating system under this program?
You may run the software that shipped with the computer or the software provided as a result of an AMP fulfillment. No other versions of the software are licensed for use. Apple's software license agreements only provide a license for the software purchased.
May I duplicate the Mac OS media?
No you may not copy or duplicate the media DVD(s). You may, however, use a single set of media to install multiple computers licensed under the subscription.
Will you send me a renewal notice each year?
Yes. The renewal date will be each year sometime in mid March.
Does the department get HUB credit on this purchase?
Yes.
Does the department have to get a bid?
No, UT has a blanket order in place with the Store for Apple products.
How does the subscription cost compare to just buying an upgrade or a MAC OS X license?
Academic license for Mac OS X
Currently priced at $69 including media. It may be used on exactly one computer and may not be transferred to another computer. The license is permanent. No subsequent upgrades are included in the pricing. When a new version or upgrade becomes available, you must buy again.
Upgrade licensing
Available from the Store. In quantities of 10 or more the pricing is less than that of buying the license and one media. For example, in quantities of 10, the upgrade costs $59 each plus media.
Apple AMP subscription
Priced at $22 per year per computer. Additional media costs apply (normally $15 for a DVD); however, one set of media may be used to install multiple machines subscribed under the program. For example, your department might buy 24 subscriptions and only one media. Future upgrades are included (media additional cost) during the subscription period. You must renew your subscription to continue using the software each year.
