Microsoft Desktop Operating System Upgrades

Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA) operating system licenses for the desktop are upgrade licenses and require that you have an existing fully-licensed version of a Microsoft Windows desktop operating system licensed for your machine. Full Windows desktop licenses cannot be purchased through any Microsoft volume licensing agreement. They can only be purchased as a Fully Packaged Product (FPP) through a retail outlet OR installed on a new computer through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) such as Dell, HP, Sony, etc.

The application licenses (Office Suite) do NOT have this requirement.

Although the Campus Agreement does provide full downgrade licensing (previous versions of Windows), Students and Faculty/Staff Work-at-Home users can only purchase the latest version of Windows Operating Systems through their campus distribution point. Departments (but not individuals) can purchase media for previous versions through the Microsoft Select Large Account Reseller, but availability may be limited.

Microsoft Server Licenses (Departments)

1The following campuses chose to "opt in" for the SQL Server "Site License" for the first year: UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Health Science Center Tyler, and UT System Offices.

Microsoft Enterprise Client Access Licenses (CALs)

Client Access Licenses (CALs) are for use in conjunction with Microsoft server products, and are thus applicable to departmental purchases only. Departments should refer to Do departments have to purchase individual Client Access Licenses for more information.

The Microsoft Enterprise CAL consists of:

  • Windows Server 2008 CAL
  • Exchange Server 2007 Standard CAL
  • Exchange Server 2007 Enterprise CAL
  • Office SharePoint Server 2007 Standard CAL
  • Office SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise CAL
  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Standard CAL
  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Enterprise CAL

Other CALs covered under the MSCA

  • Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services - Only until June 30, 2007
In addition to the the Microsoft Core CAL, Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server CALs are also fully covered under the MSCA as part of the Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Transition Plan. With previous versions of Windows Server, the TS CAL was included as part of the Windows Server CAL. However, this changed with Windows Server 2003. Please see our Windows Server 2003 Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
  • SQL Server 2000
SQL Server 2000 CALs ARE included from a previous agreement, but CANNOT be upgraded to SQL Server 2005. Please see our MSCA Frequently Asked Questions for more details.
  • Live Communications Server 2003 Device CAL
Live Communications Server (aka Real-Time Communications Server) 2003 Device CAL licensing is covered under the MSCA under a separate promotion. These CALs are permanent for version 2003 only. Departments will need to purchase CALs under the Select Agreement for Live Communications Server 2005 and later.
  • Other CALs
The current MSCA provides licensing for the above CALs during the coverage term of the agreement. Under the University's Microsoft Campus Enterprise Agreement (CEA) which was terminated in August 2002, certain products (including SQL Server CAL) are permanently covered at a fixed version. For information on the University's permanently licensed CALs, please see MSCA Frequently Asked Questions.

E-Learning

For students, faculty, and staff, Microsoft has made available online training in Microsoft Applications, Systems and Servers. Through our Campus Agreement we have access to Microsoft E-Learning. Please read the Official Microsoft E-Learning Web site to see the items that will be of interest to you.

Other Microsoft Products

Any Microsoft products not mentioned above are not covered under the Microsoft Campus Agreement.

Students and faculty/staff work-at-home users can obtain retail and educational licensing of boxed products through other retailers, including the UT Austin Campus Computer Store.

Departments that would like to obtain licensing for other products can do so under the Microsoft Select Agreement at greatly discounted rates.
