CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS MONTH 2007

“I Keep It Safe.”

There are so many different scams and other malicious stuff out there; I know the best line of defense is to avoid them. I make it a habit to take care of my computer so I can keep my personal information and data protected online.

I decided the easiest way to keep up is to set up a schedule for myself. When I shower in the morning, I update the virus definitions on my computer. I run a virus scan each week when I take out the trash. Once a month while I am paying my bills I update my anti-virus and anti-spyware software. I change my passwords on the first day of each season. And every semester when I register for class, I go to the Registrar’s Restrict My Info system to limit who can see my UT Directory information. I didn’t realize until a friend told me about it, but federal law requires the university to make some of my personal data public information unless I limit who can see it.

Having a routine has really helped me keep my computer and my personal information safe. So far I haven’t ever been infected, so I think my routine is working pretty well.
