Shibboleth

Overview

Shibboleth is an open source authentication and authorization package based on the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) standard. End users may access a Shibboleth-enabled resource using either their University of Texas at Austin EID, or using their credentials from any other UT System institution, without the need for a local account. UT Austin is a member of the UT System Federation, whose membership is limited to UT institutions.

  • Provides a single sign-on for both internal and external users
  • Integrated with the uTexas Enterprise Directory (TED)
  • Reduces development time for access controls
  • Reduces the need for end-users to maintain accounts with multiple organizations
  • Currently supporting Shibboleth Native Service Provider (SP) version 1.3

Cost

Shibboleth is available at no cost to UT faculty and staff.
