Recovering Files

If you use Austin Disk Services to store data, the server automatically makes backups, or "shadow copies," of any files stored on the Austin Disk. Having a shadow copy of the file allows you to recover it in the event that it is deleted or overwritten. It also allows you to compare current versions of files with previous versions. Shadow copies are made Monday through Friday at 7 a.m. and 12 noon, so if you recover a file, the recovered copy will be in whatever state the file was in at 7 a.m. or 12 noon.

Recovering Files

Note: You must have Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher) or Windows XP to use shadow copies.

To recover files:

  1. Install the Previous Versions Client for Shadow Copies for Shared Folders from the Microsoft Download Center if you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier.
  2. Open an Explorer window and go to the network drive that contains the directory of the files to be recovered.
  3. Right-click in the Explorer window, then select Properties.
  4. Select the Previous Versions tab. You will see backups of the directory with date and time stamps on them.
  5. You have several options for restoring files:
    • Restore entire directory and overwrite current version - select the directory with the appropriate date and time stamp, then click the Restore button.
    • Restore entire directory but save the current version of that directory - select the appropriate version of the directory that you want to restore, then click the Copy button. Specify where you want the directory copied, then click Copy.
    • Restore individual files within the directory - select the appropriate version of the directory, then click the View button. Select the file(s) you want to restore, then click Copy this file (or Copy selected items for multiple files). Select the appropriate directory, then click Copy.

Note: Restored files and directories have the same file permissions that they did prior to restoration.
