Connecting to austin.utexas.edu Disk Services using WebDAV (Windows)
NOTE: WebDAV limits file transfers to 2 GB in size. If you need to transfer larger files to austin.utexas.edu, use SFTP.
If you have subscribed to Disk Storage on austin.utexas.edu (disk.austin.utexas.edu ) and you use your disk space on the Austin domain to store files, publish Web pages or use Windows Terminal Services from a campus computer, you can use the WebDAV protocol to access Austin disk files securely from off-campus. This type of access, sometimes referred to as "opening a share," is available to students, faculty and staff at The University of Texas at Austin.
Opening a WebDAV share in Windows (2000/XP/Vista)
The following instructions assume that you are using Internet Explorer as your browser and the version of WebDAV that came with your Windows machine. If you are unsure about the latter, please contact your system administrator.
Note: If you have installed a different version of WebDAV on your machine, please refer to the documentation included with your software for instructions on how to open a WevDAV share. Please note that your software must support secure WebDAV using HTTPS. Only HTTPS (SSL) connections are supported.
- Open Internet Explorer.
- From the File menu, select Open. If you are using Internet Explorer 7, press ALT to display the menu bar. You can display the menus permanently by clicking the Tools button and selecting Menu Bar.
- In the Open field, enter the following URL, with your UT EID at the end of the line:
https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/eid
NOTE: If you are using a bulk mount, enter the following path instead, replacing sharename with the name of your bulk mount:
https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/sharename - Select the checkbox labeled Open as Web Folder, then click OK.
- When prompted for your user name and password, enter your UT EID and password.
Note: Do not select the Remember my password checkbox if you are using a public or shared computer. For security reasons, ITS recommends that you do not select the option to remember your password, even if you are using a private machine. - Click OK.
The disk share containing your files opens in "folder view" inside Internet Explorer. You can work with files in this view just as you would with a mapped drive. (For example, you can drag-and-drop files from one location to another.) The window will look similar to the one below, but your EID will appear in the locations shown and your own list of files will be displayed. - When you have finished working with your files, you must exit from your browser, closing all browser windows. That terminates the connection in a way that prevents other people from getting access to your files.
