ITS Style Guide

Formatting Dates and Times

Use the form December 2, 2000 for day, month and year; the form December 2 when only the day and month are required; and December 2000 when only month and year are required.

In headlines, such as for alerts or e-mail notices, use Day, Mon. DD, YYYY. For example, Fri., Dec. 2, 2005.

If you use the a.m. or p.m. forms for times, use 12 noon (or simply noon) and 12 midnight (or midnight). Write a.m. and p.m. with periods and in lowercase. It is not necessary to repeat a.m. or p.m. if both times are in the same block. A :00 in a time reference is unnecessary. Thus:

3 to 5 p.m. not 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
8:30 to 11 a.m. not 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
8:30 a.m. to noon
8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
