How do I create a good, strong password?
A strong password is one of the most important tools for protecting your personal information. If you learn to create strong password for your essential accounts, like your e-mail, UT Direct, and your computer, you are less likely to have your accounts compromised. It can be challenging to create a good password that’s easy to remember yet hard to crack, but there are a few tips you can follow to come up with a strong password:
- Use both upper- and lower-case letters
- Use numbers and punctuation marks - even in the middle of your password
- Use special characters, such as ! @ # $ % & * ( ) - + = , < > : ; ” ’ .
- Make your password between 8 and 20 characters long
- Use a phrase or a song title. For example, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” becomes “Sw0tR8nBO” or “Smells Like Teen Spirit” becomes “sMll10nspT.”
