Setting up your computer to access the ‘restricted.utexas.edu’ wireless network
ITS has deployed a new, more secure wireless network on campus, ‘restricted.utexas.edu’. Students, faculty, staff and official visitors are required to use this network for wireless. Because the new network provides encryption and a new authentication mechanism, you have to set up your wireless connection to be compatible with the network. Links to instructions for setting up your computer to use this wireless network are on the Public Internet Access New Users page.
The new network uses the 802.1X protocol, which ensures that UT Austin complies with federal, state, and UT System regulations that require authentication and encryption for wireless resources. For wireless network users, the new network includes several important features:
- Easier and more stable login process that means no more pop-up windows and less frequent entry of your UT EID and password.
- Encryption of all data as it travels from the client to the wireless access point across the open radio spectrum.
- Support for non-Web based platforms, such as phones, PDAs, projectors, and electronic ink boards to use the wireless network.
You must be a current student, faculty, or staff member, or an official visitor with a current UT EID to use ‘restricted.utexas.edu’.
Sponsored guests should contact their department’s technical support contact (TSC) for access to the ‘guest.utexas.edu’ wireless network.
