You must use a secure FTP client for Windows to connect to a host via sFTP. ITS recommends the SSH 3.2.3 client. You can download SSH 3.2.3 for free from BevoWare. SSH Secure Shell has a command line client and a GUI client. You must use the GUI client (Secure File Transfer Client) to connect to many services on campus.
- If you do not already have it installed, log into BevoWare and download the SSH Secure Shell program.
- Double-click the downloaded file and follow the prompts to install it.
- Open the SSH client you want to use. (From the Start menu, select All Programs --> SSH Secure Shell --> Secure File Transfer Client.)
- Click Quick Connect.
- In the Connect to Remote Host dialog, enter or select the following values:
- Host name: host name [for example, sftp.austin.utexas.edu]
- User name: Your account name
- Port number: 22
- Authentication Method: Password
- Click Connect.
- Some hosts will ask you to save a new host key to local database. Answer Yes if you are prompted.
- Enter your password at the prompt.
In the Windows client, the right panel displays the remote server file structure. Use the drop-down list to change directories, or use the navigation buttons. You can drag and drop files from your local site to the remote site.
When you have finished your session, be sure to disconnect: From the File menu, select Disconnect.
