Changing Your Mailbox Name
You can change your mailbox name once every 30 days. Your old mailbox name will continue to work for 30 days, allowing you to update your mail program with the new name and notify contacts of your new e-mail address. After 30 days, your old mailbox name is removed from the system. If you change your mind, you are able to undo a mailbox name change within the first 24 hours and restore your original mailbox name.
You do not have to wait the full 30 days, however, to cancel the old mailbox name. If you are being harassed, and are changing your mailbox name to end the harassment, you can have your old mailbox name removed at any time.
IMPORTANT: All incidents of harassment should be reported to the ITS Information Security Office.
Whether you choose to cancel your old mailbox name, or it expires after 30 days, the name is reserved for an additional 30 days after it is retired. This prevents someone else from claiming and using your old mailbox name, and possibly receiving e-mail intended for you, before your contacts start sending e-mail to your new mailbox name. This does not apply if you undo a mailbox name change within the first 24 hours after making the change.
