UMBS E-mail

Authentication for Outgoing Messages

UMBS requires authentication and encryption on all outgoing e-mail messages. This prevents spammers from bypassing the server spam defenses and keeps compromised systems on UTnet from using mail.utexas.edu to relay unwanted mail.

Errors sending messages from mail.utexas.edu accounts

If you receive a "Please authenticate first" or "Please use SSL or TLS" message when you try to send an e-mail message from your UMBS account, your e-mail client's authentication or encryption settings might be incorrect. You will not be able to successfully send e-mail messages from your UMBS account. Make sure you have set your e-mail client options for SMTP authentication and encryption connections correctly.

Errors sending messages to mail.utexas.edu accounts

If you are trying to send e-mail to a mail.utexas.edu address from another mail server and you receive a "Please authenticate first" error, your mail server is connecting to the mail.utexas.edu server in a way that violates Internet standards for e-mail. Your mail server is disregarding the MX (mail exchange) record that directs incoming e-mail for mail.utexas.edu to the appropriate servers. Contact your e-mail administrator immediately to report the problem. If you are an e-mail administrator, try flushing the DNS cache to solve the problem.
