UMBS E-mail

Mail Server Names and Ports

When you set up a desktop e-mail program to send and receive e-mail messages from your mail.utexas.edu account, you have to give the program information about how to access your mailbox.

Server Names

Most e-mail programs need the name of the server from which they receive messages (POP or IMAP server) and the name of the server that sends messages (SMTP server). If you define the account in the program as an IMAP account, you may not have to define a receiving server (this can vary depending on your e-mail program).

  • POP or IMAP Name: mail.utexas.edu
  • SMTP Name: mail.utexas.edu

Ports

E-mail servers have port numbers for e-mail programs to connect to. The port numbers are standardized and e-mail programs are defined with these numbers for encrypted and unencrypted connections. You should not have to enter port numbers unless you are sending UMBS e-mail through another Internet service provider (ISP). In that case, you may have to enter the SMTP submission port number.
