UMBS E-mail
Setting up a Desktop E-mail Program - Windows Mail
Configuring Windows Mail
- To open Windows Mail on your computer, click Start, select All Programs, select Windows Mail.
- In the Internet Connection Wizard Display name field, enter your name and click Next.
- In the E-mail address field, enter your UMBS e-mail address (umbs-username@mail.utexas.edu) and click Next.
- Select either POP3 or IMAP from the incoming mail server drop-down list depending on how you want to set up your account.
- Enter "mail.utexas.edu" as both the Incoming mail and Outgoing mail server names.
- Enter your Account name and Password in the appropriate fields.
- Verify that Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not selected.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
Securing Windows Mail
- From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
- In the Internet Accounts dialog, select the Mail tab.
- Select your UMBS e-mail account and click Properties.
- Select the Servers tab.
- Make sure that Outgoing Mail (SMTP) is set to mail.utexas.edu
- Make sure that Log on using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked.
- Under Outgoing Mail Server, ensure that My server requires authentication is checked.
- Click the Settings button.
- Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
Caution: For UMBS e-mail, do not use the "Log on using" option. If you choose this option your password could get out of sync and that would prevent you from sending e-mail.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- At Outgoing mail, select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
NOTE: Windows Mail does not support the use of alternate ports. If SBC or another Internet Service Provider (ISP) won't let you send mail to a remote server using port 25, you will have to switch to a different e-mail program, such as Thunderbird.
- At Incoming mail select This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port number will change, which is okay.
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
- Close Windows Mail and restart it for the change to take effect.
NOTE:
Send a test e-mail from another account to your UMBS e-mail account to make sure everything works.
