Project: vDesk Virtual Desktops
vDesk Project Overview
02/09/2012 - The next phase of the vDesk initiative continues with new customers coming on board in the past few months and the launch of a comprehensive review and analysis of the service in order to support long-term sustainability and define key points for further technology investment.
In the spring 2010 semester, the Cockrell School of Engineering, College of Communication, and McCombs School of Business will join ITS in assessing the feasibility of making vDesk available campus-wide. Currently, vDesk is being used in computer labs in these departments. These early adopters are assisting the following departments on campus with their own vDesk initiatives:
- School of Nursing
- Jackson School of Geosciences
- School of Social Work
- School of Law
Goals
The goals of Phase III are to:
- Recommend a cost model for governance committee approval.
- Assess the feasibility of administrative desktops.
- Gather trending, forecasting statistics and create oversubscription model.
- Define a sustainable support model for vDesk infrastructure devices
- Create a case study of a 50 desktop lab desktop versus vDesk cost assessment.
- Continue outreach to prospective customers of vDesk.
Scope
The scope of the vDesk Phase III includes:
- Meeting with the AIC governance committee to approve charges for vDesk services.
- Getting vDesk rates approved by the Office of the CFO.
- Developing a trending, monitoring, and forecasting methodology.
- Evaluating and onboarding additional vDesk customers.
- Investigate additional VDI technology as appropriate.
- Engage new and potential vDesk customers as appropriate.
