Creating a Client Profile for your VPN Private Group
When saved in the correct location on the user's computer, a Client Profile file will add a new connection entry to the user's VPN Client window. It will also automatically populate their username (EID@groupname) in the username field.
- Create a new text file with a text editor, such as Notepad or TextMate.
- Name the file according to the following convention: utvpn-groupname.pcf, where groupname is the name of the private group that ITS Networking has assigned to your department.
- Copy the contents of the sample client profile to your new text file.
- Go to the Username= line and replace EID@groupname with the user's EID and the private group name. (i.e. Username=jdoe@engineering)
- Save the file.
- Distribute the Client Profile file to each end user in the group. Have them place this profile in the UT VPN Client Profile Directory on their computer. Default directory locations are as follows:
- Windows -> c:\Program Files\UT VPN Client\profiles
- Macintosh -> /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles/
- Linux -> /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles/
After completing this procedure, the user will have a new profile listed in their Cisco VPN Client (see image below.) The user will need to choose this profile and enter their password. The campus VPN will authenticate and automatically place the user in your private group, assigning an IP address that falls in the range assigned to you by ITS Networking.
