Creating and Managing Identities
A Webmail identity is a way for you to identify yourself through e-mail. The identity profile stores your name, e-mail address, reply-to address, and signature preferences. Webmail can store multiple identities in your profile.
You can store and modify multiple identities, and send e-mail from any identity. You can also set up any "From" address, making an e-mail appear as though it comes from a club – for example, pingpongclub@utexas.edu. Be aware that your real e-mail identity still appears in the e-mail headers, and that abusive use of this feature is prohibited. See the university's Acceptable Use Policy.
Note: Avoid using "From" and "Reply-to" addresses that are not at utexas.edu, as this could cause your messages to be classified as spam.
Complete the following steps to create a Webmail identity.
- Click the Mail icon in the left sidebar to access the Mail application.
- Click the Options icon at the top of the screen to display the configuration options for Mail.
- Click Personal Information in the General Options column.
- From the Select the identity you want to change pull-down menu, select Create a new one.
- Enter information into the following fields:
- Identity's Name is a Webmail name for this account. It does not appear in any e-mails that you send.
- Your Name is the name that will display in e-mails from this account.
- Your From: address is the e-mail address that you want to appear in the "From" field whenever you send an e-mail under this identity.
- Your Reply-to: address is the e-mail address to which replies will be sent. This can be different than the From address.
- Your signature is the signature you want to associate with this file. You can use a different signature for each identity. You do not have to create a signature for an identity.
- Click the Save Options button. Your new identity now appears in the list of identities.
You can edit any identity after it is saved. Select the identity from the pull-down menu as described in Step 4, edit the information, then click Save Options to save the identity.
When you are composing a new e-mail message, you can use the Identity pull-down menu to select the Webmail identity from which the e-mail will appear to be sent.
