The appeal of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is particularly surprising in Texas, a solidly Republican state and the home of President Bush. Unlike economically battered Ohio, Texas has weathered the current economic downturn relatively well. “Texas is a different political universe now with Bush being both absent and not as much the apple of everybody’s eye,” says Jim Henson, the director of the Texas Political Project at the University of Texas, Austin. There are plenty of reasons for the phenomenon, including Republican disenchantment with their party and their distrust of Sen. McCain, as well as their strong dislike for Sen. Clinton.
