Know is on the scene for President Barack Obama’s Aug. 9 speech at Gregory Gym on The University of Texas at Austin campus.

The president discussed higher education and the need to become more globally competitive.

“We have been slipping,” he said. “In a single generation we have fallen from first place to 12th place in college graduation rates. That is unacceptable, but not irreversible.”

Obama said the solution includes making college more affordable, overhauling the Federal Student Loan program and streamlining student loan repayment.

“The way to move forward is to put education first,” he said. “Education and opportunity always go hand in hand.”

Those are some fantastic pictures. I still think he's fantastic despite the pasting he's had about healthcare reform. He's good to see someone in power who actually gives a damn!

I just watched the video of the University of Texas Police Department hand cuffing a young man who was within his rights as a citizen. Each officer and administrator that was behind his being shut down and led away needs to make a public apology and allow him to come back, or they need to be fired. This is against our rights in the country and it's a frightening reality that persecution is closer than we think. You can watch the interchange here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBby25T40Q4&feature=player_embedded

You Texans are lucky. Obama only taps states for campaign funds that he knows are reliably Democratic. States that are not ( like Texas) or teetering on the edge (like Colorado), he visits for pep talks, photo ops, and may even leave behind Federal goodies. But dumb states like California never receive any Federal goodies when he visits. We're just his ATM ( Hollywood, San Francisco) for campaign funds.

Follow-up: This goes beyond what happened to the activists. This affects ALL of us! The university just set itself back by allowing these first amendment rights to be violated. This is not a partisan issue. It's not about red versus blue, right versus left, republican versus democrat. This is about oppression and tyranny...right smack on The University of Texas at Austin campus. "What starts here changes the world"...really?

On Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, four PEACEFUL activists (Robin Schneider, Chanda Seymour, Daniel McCarthy and John Bush) were arrested and detained by UTPD officers for not staying within the "free-speech zone," a designed area (about two to three blocks AWAY from Gregory Gym) from which people can congregate and express their first amendment rights. Ms. Seymour was arrested for simply ASKING questions about the free-speech zone. This is disgusting behavior by UTPD! And for UT officials, the dean of students specifically, to stand there and watch the entire thing transpire and ALLOW it to happen is embarrassing. YouTube videos are available of the arrests.
