Forty six years ago, The University of Texas at Austin awarded me a Ph.D degree in Botany, with the famous Harold C. Bold as my major professor. Electron microscopy was a large part of my dissertation, and W. Gordon Whaley brought the first electron microscope to the UT Campus in the Natural Scienes. We have come a long way since these days! Z-Hall is no longer there. Experimental Science Bldg has been torn down and replaced. We no longer have a Department of Botany that once ranked No 1 in the Nation. This is a GREAT University, and I am proud and lucky not only to have received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from UT-Austin, but also to have served on the faculty, two times! I am very proud of the Graduate School which really got its largest advancement through the early encouragement and support of Dean W. Gordon Whaley! Thus, I want everyone to know that this man had a very significant impact on our Graduate School! May we have a second 100 years! R. Malcolm Brown, Jr. Professor of Biology, Johnson & Johnson Centennial Chair.
