Associate Professor of Photojournalism Donna DeCesare has a keen appreciation for the visual. The diminutive, green-eyed blonde appreciates the visual irony of her experiences living among war refugees, convicts and gangs, such as the notorious 18th Street Gang of Los Angeles and El Salvador.

Immersing herself in the community has certainly added to the quality of her work. Often one may quickly visit and take a picture of an area or scene and later wish they had been in a different perspective. She shows absolute dedication by spending so much time in the culture.
DeCesare's work is the most difficult thing to do: penetrate one community - that has many reasons to not let it happen - in order to communicate to another, larger community, in order to promote understanding. She is doing important work and is doing it bravely and with great skill and, for those of us who want to know what the world is really like, we owe her great gratitude. Thank you Donna Cesare.
